Organic hemp cultivation

The hemp plant is one of the fastest growing and most undemanding plants. Hemp thrives in almost all regions, but it produces the best yields in areas with high rainfall, nutrient-rich soil and a light climate. When hemp is grown for fiber, the seeds are sown very close together. The closely spaced plants grow upward as long, leafless stems, forming leaves and flowers only at the tips. If, on the other hand, the plant is to be cultivated for the production of seeds, it is sown at a greater distance apart in order to form as many flowers and seeds as possible through the sprouting of side shoots.

Due to its robust and uncomplicated characteristics, the hemp plant does not need pesticides or herbicides, as it is resistant to insects and weeds. The absence of the use of pesticides and herbicides has a huge ecological advantage and also protects the health of field workers.

After the hemp seed, which is sown in Central Europe between April and mid-May, is placed in the soil, it is not necessary for the farmer to take care of it for the next 100 days. There is no other crop that is less work in cultivation than hemp. After a little more than three months, the hemp, which can reach a height of 4.50 m, can already be harvested.

An interesting fact: due to the chemical-free cultivation and its excellent properties to eliminate weeds, hemp leaves an optimally prepared field for subsequent plants. The fine veins of the root system have penetrated and loosened the entire soil. A wheat or potato field where hemp was planted the year before yields 10% more.

Here you will learn how the hemp fiber is extracted and then refined...
